Liability and Claims Rules

How does the deductible work? How should I choose it?

A deductible is the portion you must pay yourself when filing a claim.

Operation:
Usually applies to Collision and Comprehensive coverage.
For example, if your Collision deductible is $500 and repair costs are $3,000, you pay $500 and the insurance company pays $2,500.
If you are 50% at fault, you may need to pay half the deductible ($250).

Selection:
Higher deductibles mean lower premiums.

Recommendation:
For "high-risk" groups such as new immigrants, those without a Quebec driver's license, first-time Quebec insurance buyers, or single males under 25, initially choosing lower deductibles (e.g., $500 for Collision, $250 for Comprehensive) can reduce out-of-pocket expenses when filing claims.

Note:
"Deductible waiver" endorsements are not very popular in Quebec auto insurance, because even small claims within the deductible amount may cause next year's premium to increase, often making it not worthwhile.
